I would suspect that most options are going to be a few hundred dollars. What is going on that your current starter is "shot?" Maybe for now you can clean it up and lubricate it to getting it working well enough? A little time and energy, but no money. Make sure you have a good battery and cables as those will make a big difference. I'm not a big fan of 12 volt conversions as I think they are too often done to compensate for other issues.
