Dear TommyCourt:

You can learn at least something from everybody. For example, I never thought it was possible to pull a Junior Packard powertrain without removing the cross member. However, I did install a powertrain in a 10th series car with the cross member in place. In that car the floor boards were out.

So you will find the job easier if you remove the cross member. However, you will need to support the trans with a jack.

Also you can pull the entire front clip assembly in one piece which is easier than working over those fenders.

Post 9th series Packards do well when having the powertrains dropped into a pit using an overhead gantry crane. Believe me, two experienced hands can drop Junior Packard 8's into the pit in under an hour flat.

The V-12 does better using a gantry crane to raise the power train overhead and pushing the car out of the way.

Good luck.
