1947 Super Clipper ammeter

I took the 47 out the other day for a drive. It died on me at some point-when I looked down at the ammeter-it showed still charging. I started it up and drove on-when I shut it down-I tapped the gage and it returned to the neutral position. Today I ran it again and basically the needle stayed maybe slightly charge. Turning lights on did not result in any change. Looking at the wiring diagram-one end of the ammeter goes to the neg terminal of the battery and the other connects to the voltage regulator.

1. Is there a easy way to check the gage
2. Possible the regulator is at fault?

I might add I had a battery disconnect switch on the battery-removing it seemed to not make a difference.

Suggestions appreciated

David
