54 Clipper heat riser

I have a question about some parts that I discovered were not in place on my engine(288). I looked in the service index and found some of the information, but not all that I need.
1. My hear riser has only that counter weight on the manifold side near the firewall. No spring or cover for the spring anywhere. Should that be on the front side towards the radiator?

2. I see an tube (1 1/2 inch) that looks as though there should be a hose coming off of it on the side of the block next to the heat riser. What should the connection be and where?

3. I do I tell if the heat riser is open? It could cause my overheating as I found out in previous posts.

My manual does not show the 54 engine heat riser set up.


The car starts and runs, cooling system all clean and new, engine temp heats up in a couple of minutes.
