20-21st trunk lid molding

This subject has come up before from another poster so thought I'd ask again if anyone has suggestions before I blindly take these lid moldings off my car.

20-21 series lists two retainers and eight 3/16 x 1/4 rivets as needed for the moldings. As you can see from the inside lid photo where I removed one, rivets - 4 per side - is what is holding the molding and retainers on. It apparently changed on later cars since most but not all of the 22-3 series lists several clips. Those later clips are probably the pieces that have been mentioned as needing the top unfolded or bent straight to remove.

Question is how did a body shop remove the lid moldings on a 20-21st series and the few later riveted cars if work was needed. Do the moldings slide or snap off the retainers in some fashion or did the rivets get ground off to remove the retainer as well as the molding. Don't want to bend the moldings so grinding is what I am leaning toward at the moment unless someone has an idea.

If grinding is the method how did a body shop reattach the moldings before the clips were available.
