Gosh, this gets old and frustrating at times! They didn't say Standardized VIN. They said simply VIN and, as it means vehicle identification number which is the legally accepted term here in California and probably elsewhere, it is perfectly appropriate for any year of vehicle because it is the number that identifies the vehicle. Also, the Standardized VIN wasn't as standardized as you might expect and some countries did not use it even on relatively late model cars.

So bottom line, Vehicle ID number, VN and VIN are exactly the same thing contrary to the constant corrections being made.
