Just to round out the picture for Packard as they referred to it on their identification plates, they never called it a vehicle identification number or a serial number. From 1900 thru about 1919, the ID plate captioned it as simply "Number". From then thru 1953 the space was captioned "Vehicle Number". From 1954 thru 1956 there was no descriptor given to the number.
