coolant leak above valve cover

Hello Gentlemen,
I have a coolant leak that I have tracked to somewhere above the rear valve cover. The leak gets lost somewhere behind the manifold. This is on a newly rebuilt 356 engine that has been warmed up about 5-6 times.
Can a head gasket leak externally? I have not re-torqued the head. Do any of the manifold bolts enter water in the block?
