Where to put exterior mirrors on a 1947 clipper?

My 1947 Clipper came with exterior mirrors that are not visible from drivers position.




So I had a look for a substitue and got a pair of these:

Question arises: Where is the best place to mount these mirrors?
Is the door panel stable enough to withstand wind drag and the occasional touch by curious folks?
And how do I protect the moulding from being crushed?
