As far as the replacement hydraulic lifters are concerned, I replaced a collapsed original with the reproduction replacement 5 years ago along with rings and new valves. The lifter is still quiet and seems to be functioning well. The lifter has now has 1,700 miles on it. Are you referring to the small spring at the top of the lifter, or the large valve spring? I seem to remember the small spring moved fairly easily when I disassembled the original lifters to clean them. Of course, you shouldn't be able to budge the large spring without a spring retracting tool.
