Re: Car Stalls When Put in Gear

Then that is almost certainly the governor. The transmission is under the impression that you are motoring at a good speed down the road and thus engages the direct drive clutch the instant you put the car in gear. Stall.

The governor is under the hex shaped sheet metal cover on the right side of the trans. Yes, it is possible to get the screws out with the trans in the car. Under the cover is the governor which a hydraulic spool valve that spins around when the car is moving. Hold it still with your hand, and unbolt it from its shaft. You can then take it out, clean it with carb cleaner, make sure its parts are perfectly free and then put it back. Usually, I am never able to see what made it stick, but stick it will.

You can attempt an easier fix: support the rear axle on good stout jack stands with the tires well off the floor. Get the engine warmed up and then put it in gear. The wheels should spin up. Run it up to 40 or so then back to idle several times. This might free the governor. To check let the speed drop to about 15 then slowly apply the brakes. If all is well the wheels should stop and the engine will keep going.
