Apparently according to the patent when the fuel sloshed around it was causing an annoying whistling due to the difference in pressure in the tank and fill tube as the fuel move around in a partially full tank.
I checked both of my tanks and they don't have this change, but that patent did say 1950 so when I get my tanks fixed I've have to listen for a whistling while driving around.
