After one of those runs where the car will not top forty, pullout a plug or two and see what color they are--white/lean or black/rich.

Likely your carb's metering rods are not moving or are set very wrong. Or main jets are restricted. Have also seen carbs with the float level set so low the carb had almost nothing to work with.

Oh, and while you have your timing light out, accel. the engine and watch the marks. As you accel to 2k rpm or so the marks should walk up past the pointer quite a ways. When you snap the throttle back to idle, the marks should jump perhaps 2/3 of the way back at once (vac advance working properly), and then the marks should come back to initial setting as the engine slows to idle.
