Re: 1953-1954 Air Cleaner Support Pics?

There are at least two air cleaners available for 54 models and the cleaner used on the 4 barrel 359 engine is a different cleaner than used on a 53 and maybe a 54 327 engine with a 4 barrel. They each take different brackets. Over the years someone could have also installed an air cleaner from another year or engine. To get the correct bracket you kind of need to know what cleaner you have.

All the brackets mount with a single bolt to the side of the head in the same location but the bends and the direction the bracket extends from the engine depends on the cleaner in question.

Here are a couple of examples. First is a 54 359 cleaner. Note the bracket has a single angled 90 degree bend which extends toward the carb because that cleaner assy is shorter than the others. The second photo is a 54 327 style cleaner which in this case is on a 2 barrel. Except for the size of the carb opening, the 4 barrel cleaner is the same. Both cleaners are longer than the 359 version meaning the bracket extends the other direction and has two bends.

The service article photo is of the 54 359 bracket. It basically shows how they were all made -- the bend height, number and angle was the variation. The criteria of the bends and their angle is to keep the cleaner level and bends angled to support the cleaner at fairly close to 90 degrees across the engine.
