I wouldn't recommend to go cheap on brake systems for the cost of a cable(s), even if you got it "free"/working it was obviously quite rusted and subject to break under tension. Also the time savings from cutting and replacing is enormous compared to soak and hope.
If a non-automatic, you need "parking" brakes for a clutched vehicle.
Getting if "free" so to disassemble and work on is a different story than I speak to...where all "original" doesn't apply.
