The Home Depot thing I had didn't seal. Too many press-on connections. No way to tighten them. Harbor Freight has one like this for $4.49. No sucking. Just squeeze the bulb (note arrow on bulb of direction of intended flow).

Prop up the tank with a box or floor jack while you work on undoing the straps and tank-to-filler spout connection.

You can get most of the gas out this way, but there will still be some in the line and tank to run down your sleeve. You can spray the drain with WD40 or similar while you loosen other stuff. Give it a try, but as PackardDon warns, don't force it if it's crusty. Follow that wire from the gauge for any frayed insulation or breaks.

Someone here knows. If it's shorted, the gauge reads full all the time? If the wire is broken, it reads empty all the time? Look for a junction of front and rear harnesses (on my '40 it's under the driver) to be sure all the wires are interconnected.https://www.harborfreight.com/Fluid-Siphon-Pump-62613.html
