They are not all rubber, they are various compositions, altering the coefficient of friction between the various leaves for optimal ride characteristics, a Packard patent. You can't replicate them but there are various alternatives such as Teflon liners, and also the alternative of just eliminating them. Others who have actually gone thru this will have better information.
