Not disagreeing at all with your overall conclusions but IMO one significant reason for the loss in 1946 is the expense of tooling and preparation for the 22nd series which began production in April, 1947 so much of the expense would have been borne in the prior year.

A second drain on resources would be the continuing costs to develop Ultramatic for which development began in 1945 according to Neal.
