If gas is getting into the oil because of a split diaphragm, you can do a quick check by using the oil dip stick to see if

1. if your oil smells of gas

2. if the oil is thinner (less viscous) than normal

3. the level of oil is higher than the full mark

I personally would not attempt rebuilding a fuel pump. Parts are under a lot of pressure, etc. Many others may find it an easy job, but I have step by step instructions and after looking them over, shipped mine back in exchange to Kanter, who guarantees their fuel pumps.
