Because of the front motor mount it has to be pre 51 so not a 50s engine in the actual year of car it came out of sense.

The distributor is slightly forward of center so not the 356 and probably is the 288. It has a post war EC and placement of the coil on the engine, along with the R9 OD means most likely it is early 22nd series. The square flange is used with the Spicer U joints so maybe go thru the parts manual and find which models used that U joint to narrow it farther.
