this may sound stupid, but did you run a compression test ? just because it was rebuilt doesn,t mean the valve seats were faced correctly. also'did you check the valve clearances? my 1949 288 was running hot because the valve clearances were too small.Try .007 intake and .010 exhaust. Adjusting the valves is a big job because you must remove both manifolds.Separate them and remove one at a time . much easier that way.
