Are you sure that number is on the Head and not on the block?

If it's on the block on a machined pad in the location you described, then the ' J' signifies 1951 (or 24th Series)

J2XXXXX = 288, 8Cyl, 135hp, 200/200 Deluxe, 5 bearing
J4XXXXX = 327, 8Cyl, 150hp, 250/300, 5 bearing
J6XXXXX = 327, 8Cyl, 155hp, 400 Patrician, 9 bearing
