What about the arms on the tranny itself. Can you move them until they are in neutral?

The 4 ball bearings in the lid of my tranny looked like deflated bean bags, not spheres at all anymore. And the spring in the tunnel between the bearings was sticking out like a coat hanger. I put in new balls and springs from the hardware store, I'm pretty sure. Then it shifted again. This may not be your problem at all, I realize, but it can happen and lock up the gears.

Oftentimes you can jiggle it into neutral.
