In the days before leaded gas and detergent oil valve and ring wear were much more of a problem than today. A MMO could significantly reduce upper cylinder, ring and valve wear extending engine life between overhauls.

Now that they have gone back to unleaded gas and low zinc oil if I had one on my car I would use it.
