New to Packardworld-Just trying to get car started

Hello all. I purchased a 1948 Touring Sedan 2262. Came without keys or tumbler switch. Have been trying to get a spark by running negative ground to starter and a hot wire set up to the coil but cannot get spark. New coil, points .017 set, condenser, cap and rotor.
After looking at the electrical chart on this site, I cannot tell if the -coil wire goes to the battery or distributor.
Again, I apologize for asking newbie questions, but I am flummoxed.
