Look at attached pic of my 1948 288. Note that in nearly all cases of Flat head engines the spark plugs set closest to EXH. valve.
So from Rear of engine to front of engine:
8---76---54---32---1
E I EE I EE I EE I E
EACH cylinder has has only ONE exhaust port. But each cylinder SHARES an INTake port with one other cylinder.
