Back to the original question, I don't know if the copper is necessary and it's only rated to 500 degrees max which might be close to the temp at that particular spot with no block to absorb some of the heat. With a gasket though, that shouldn't be an issue.

Manifold gaskets and turbos are one of the recommended uses for it so guess that concentrated heat is taken into consideration. It probably wouldn't hurt and would fill in any surface imperfections.
