The bolt that goes through the "t" both holds it on the rear axle and also acts as a vent for the rear axel. Without the vent, the pressure from heat generated in the axle may blow gear oil out past the inner seals washing the grease away from the wheel bearings.

I am sure those specials Tees are out there available in parts caches for not a lot of money.
