Not nylon. I believe they were "Stayfast" or some type of a woven fabric not unlike Haartz cloth.

UPDATE: Speaking with some others, most of us believe 1954 was the last year for a "canvas" type convertible top. 1955 and 56 were a synthetic (but certainly not nylon), perhaps a multiple layer job of cotton inside, a Hypalon interior layer with a vinyl top layer.
