Owen Dynetos post #6 above pretty much tells the whole story relative to gen v alt.

However there is a downside to alternators (WITH INTERNAL REGULATORS or e-regs) especialy in the special interest vehicle applications. The problem is htat if the battery is allowed to discharge, as in long periods of setting unused, then the sudden demand to recharge the battery upon start up puts alot of load on the internal regulator or e-regulators.

So those of u converting to highly SPECIALIZED types of alternators such as the conbination 6/12v alternator are probably asking for very expensive maintenance costs over 5 to 10 years of use due sporatic operation of special interest applications.

The best solution i've seen thus far is Startergenrebuilders offer (in above post) for $175 + ship. I've never dealt with him but he has some good posting here at P'info.com. Of course i prefer to do my own rebuilding but those of u that can't or just don;t want to rebuild your own mite try his offer.

The other option is common-ordinary over the local parts counter Delco alternator. Havn't bought one recently but they are usualy cheap and plentiful.

Bottom line: I would avoid 'custom' applications such as the combination 6/12volt alts. Where will u get parts and service for it 10 years from now, or what will it cost????
