IIRC the original gasket was very thin. Am wondering if your new is thicker or stiffer and not seating somewhere. For my 2 bits, a SMALL amount of silicone wouldn't hurt--just take care it doesn't ooze out and get in any valve or passage. You are right to be careful on the screws. They might not break but the pot metal they screw into will strip very easily.
