My dad passed away in 1980, and my mom in 1999. My dad was Jewish and had to leave Germany in a hurry, so I have no period Auto Union or Mercedes memorabilia; not even personal photos. My mother was Italian, and they met in Switzerland, where I was born in 1947. Her cousin was Count Johnny Lurani, the Italian racer and automotive journalist. We moved to England in 1950, and to Chicago in 1954. I graduated Northwestern in 1968, and from 1968 until 1997, spent 75% oif my time in Europe and 25% of my time in the US.
