NEVER cross polarity when jumping or charging a battery. Positive-to-positive and negative-to-negative!!!!

The original batteries were Group 60 which is pretty much extinct. You'll find a lot of discussion on this site on alternative batteries which will fit the carrier, or modifications to the carrier where needed. I use a Group 27 at the moment, and have used a Group 31 in the past. Neither required modification to the carrier, but the Grup 27 did require a modified hold-down.

If authenticity in appearance is important, you can get an Optima covered with a look-alike Group 60 cover, but the cost is very high.
