I would have to look at one of my pumps to thoroughly refressh my memmory but the RECESS is necessary for the HOLE IN THE RECESSS to have ANY elemination of hydraulic lock effect as BH explained above. This applies ONLY to the SECOND generation pump.

Let me state it a second way:

IF the hole existed with NO recess then the hole MITE line up with the wall of the bore in the pump (depending on assembly and vibration) and thus rendered useless to prevent hydraulic lock.
