power steering filter

Noticed an interesting thing upon taking my pump apart. The filter top and bottom on this filter is cardboard. Looking at photos in SM, it may even be an original filter.

There is no bottom support used so other than center metal core of filter fitting over a slight bevel on the mount, filter is suspended. Over the years the element had worked it's way down and inner core had been pushed thru exposing a row of large holes at the top. With holes exposed it was not really doing much to filter. Probably not a big issue in itself but if the element also starts disintegrating maybe it could pump crud thru the system. Wonder if anyone else has noticed this in their rebuilds or how many may be out there like this.

The replacement filter Max supplies in his rebuild kit has metal top and bottoms so hopefully the element moving on the core will no longer be an issue.
