IIRC, the common 1-3/4" soft plugs are not the correct ones for the Packard V8. They're too small and too deep.
Packard V8s require a less-common-but-still-available 1-49/64" shallow soft plug. They're still in the book, both in plated steel and in brass.
I just bought a box full last week.
