You can purchase (from MSC, for example) sintered bronze rod, the type of material Chrysler patented back in the 20s or 30s as "Oilite"; being sintered it's porous to a degree and can be saturated with a lubricant and makes superb bushings for generators, starters, small motors, etc. The only trick is that lathe-turning it tends to close the pores so after turning you might want to hone as a final sizing step.
