Trunk Latch Assembly adjustment

Most of you out there deal with serious car problems and will probably consider this one simply laughable.

A couple of weeks ago, my trunk key broke off inside the lock cylinder. A friend who owns the garage where I store my car and I managed to finally get the lock to turn and I opened the trunk, but the lock cylinder was destroyed in the process.

This weekend I installed a new lock cylinder and reinstalled the latch assembly. Because of the position of the lock and the position of the three screws that hold the assembly in place, there was no way that I did not install correctly.

Being leery about the old stock lock cylinder, I climbed into the trunk armed with a bar flashlight and screw driver and Joe closed the trunk lid. It did not catch. Subsequently we adjusted the strike plate in every conceivable position, and still the latch did not work.

Examining the assembly, we could see that there are two parts to the end that slips between the strike plate loop. One end is stationary and has a sloping end that I believe is supposed to stay inside the loop, while the other, shorter end moves in and up. Working properly, I believe it is supposed to hold the latch down on the loop, locking in place when the trunk is closed.

The photos that I have included are ones I found on eBay, since I am not near my car at this time. They get the point across, however.

Any and all advice is more than welcome.
