Re: 1955 Clipper outside door handle

Here are a few photos that might help. The first three are mine and show the inner workings of the handle assy. Those parts consist of the handle, lock cylinder, spring, retaining rings, flat bar, and the latch collar. The other two are of locks that are on ebay.

The collar on the flat bar is what actually releases the latch by pushing on a movable part of the latch to release the toothed wheel. The collar is held on the flat bar by a setscrew. It is possible the screw has allowed the collar to slide back a bit too far on the flat bar so it is not able to push the movable part of the latch far enough to release. It is also possible there is a problem in the latch itself.

On front doors the flat bar extends past the movable part and slides into a tapered receiver piece. When you turn the key the entire lock cylinder and flat bar rotates to turn that tapered part. Linkage moves parts inside the latch to lock or unlock the door. On rear doors there is no outside locking provision so the tapered piece and associated linkage is not present.

I couldn't find a decent single latch photo on ebay showing all the pertinent parts so these two photos each shows a part. The rear door assy shows the important moveable latch release part (looks the same on the front door) the handle button and collar pushes against to release the latch. The front drivers door assy shows the tapered receiver piece that turns and moves linkage to lock or unlock the door with the key.

If the screw loosened and a slipped collar is causing the problem you may be able to adjust without disassembly.
