I wouldn't think a 40 amp relay would fail, or that an NOS ignition switch would give trouble, if it is in good condition.
Is it possible you have a wiring issue?
A break or short in a wire bundle could cause multiple issues.
I'd also look for any possible grounding issues, such as engine to chassis, body to chassis, etc.
I have had a starter balk, then engage, then hang up engaged and cranking the engine. Engine started, starter kept cranking. I had to pull a battery cable to stop it.
In that case, a small amount of water had worked its way into the starter mechanism and froze.
