Here’s a write-up for the post-war through ’55 cars. I believe the ’56 design uses shims, versus a crush sleeve, to set the pre-load on the pinion bearings, so the obsession with returning the pinion nut to the exact pre-disassembly position could be relaxed. Getting the pinion in the exact position would still be quite acceptable in the ’56 design.
