I just went out and checked all my Packard distributors and you're right, the hole is big enough to get the plate out without removing the cam.
I remember why I had to remove the cam on one distributor, it was when I was doing some cleaning and re-oiling on it. Too many distributors and engines and they all sometimes flow together! I must be getting old and forgetful, time for some of that Ginkgo-Biloba stuff I guess!
Now I feel like a total idiot, retreating back to strictly an observer....
