Re: Oldsmobile oil pump conversion kit update

Hey folks:

Attached is an oil pressure picture at 2000 rpm fast idle. The gauge is attached because when the motor was first started the dashboard gauge showed nothing. A few quick checks indicated that the oil pump was definitely working. When the car came in the oil Pressure gauge read really high because the previous garage (Packard dealer) had put in some kind of trick sender that reads really high. I guess that is one way to keep the cars from coming back.

Anyway, the oil pressure using an NOS updated pump is right at Packard Spec 50psi (10psi at 400 rpm idle) using 10w-30 oil. I don't think using heavy oil is good for this motor because the oil pump plate is just a flat piece of steel and subject to damage from too much pressure.

The problem here is that the dashboard gauge is defective and useless (probably since 1956). This car is on its third block because the radiator wasn't replaced when they overbored the block 45 years ago and it cracked.

I still think the drain plug location on these motors is terrible and likely the cause of much sludging as was the case with this junkyard block.
