Bendix -Treadle Vac - Failure and Fix

All,

I've remained quiet for the last (2) weeks as I've had a few problems with my 400. You all are aware of the transmission: and I need to install a front seal it seems. I limped home today (over my pal's objection) without using my trailer. In covering 11 miles, I was down 2 1/2 qts of Merc-Dex by the time I reached my garage.

But the 400 has been at my pal's garage for the last (10) days, as the the BTV also failed on me. As some of you might remember, I had it professionally rebuilt some months back and only put (400) miles on the car. My failure amounted to the pedal not staying hard and then slowly falling to the floor. I could pump the pedal & I would get stopping power; but I'd lose pressure and would have to use the e-brake to stay motionless.

I was frankly a bit embarrassed and I didn't mention this to anyone. I wanted to try and solve things without "running" to my friend & Packard pal Craig in Las Vegas. Many of you probably forgot, that I flew to Las Vegas years ago, and assisted Craig doing his initial disc brake conversion.

Anyway, I contacted the rebuidler this week and he sent me the items pictured. I explained that all wheel cylinders were clear and working fine. I pulled every brake hub and carefully checked for weeping etc. I then traced the new steel lines I'd installed and all was fine.

We replaced the new check valve and also installed the new O-ring by submerging the new assembly underneath the fluid and tightening. I inspected each "old" part and saw a small amount of damage on the O-ring only. The unit was then put back into the car. Once in the car, I put 2 1/2 ounces of brake fluid into the reservoir. I started the car, and drove it around very slowly in a large parking lot. It worked fine>

Okay.........so I do now have some concerns, questions and requests.

Concerns - you see the attached pictures.......Could the check valve pathway be overbored?

Questions ..... just like modern fuels are different than those of 1955; could Dot 3 brake fluid have properties than are different than typical in 1955.

Requests...........seems like collectively the Packard oil pump issue was resolved (my car runs fine with 14 lbs pressure at idle when hot) after 400 miles, so can we all find a easy and workable solution to solve BTV. I would also lean towards something that also looks very presentable inside by the pedals.
