ALSO, about 1/2 inch from the bottom of the bore and at the 6'oclock position there is a peculiar round indentation about 1/16" deep and 3/8" in diameter which pretty much blows my foundry core removal theory for the taper.

Edit, no wait a minute, that mite confirm the foundery core removal theory if the core were in 2wo halves parallel to the bore.
