On the transmission, when you say the indicator is all over the place---As you move the lever and feel the gears, once the detent is felt does the lever have a lot of slop on either side of the gear or does that feel fairly solid and it is the indicator needle only that is moving.

If it is the first situation and the whole lever assy feels loose with several inches of travel at the detent, than a screw holding the potmetal control valve lever piece in trans is probably loose on the shaft and needs to be corrected before it strips completely leaving you without any gears.

If it is only the indicator, there is a clamp arrangement under the dash on the steering column which connects the shift tube to the pointer that may be the issue.

Let us know which it is and some suggestions to fix it will be forthcoming.

Drive shaft places can build entire shafts so they should be able to come up with something for your repair but others have more expertise in that area so best let them give their recommendations.
