I painted a 1953-55 Packard wire wheel hubcap that way years ago. I sprayed it all and the next day I took a rubber sanding block with a felt pad on it and chrome polish and rubbed off all the raised areas. It came out well. I may try that on an old stainless ribbed piece as an experiment.
