How would painting the pieces, then wiping or polishing the paint off from the high parts? This would seem like an easier way to get the stripping repainted. I offer this suggestion as theory. I have no experience in practice. Just a thought...

I tried that, but was unable to perfect the technique. May work well for someone with a better touch or feel for that.
I tried using a T-shirt wrapped around a large squeegee and a small amount of lacquer thinner on the T-shirt.
