Oh, I didn't mean to suggest a club coupe instead of a Packup - though that might be interesting as well.

What I meant was that the Dodge/Desoto business coupe has a profile that just begs for a pickup. In fact, the aperture for the door glass reminds me of the treatment on the 73-77 ElCamino - though the latter used a hardtop style of door.

Yet, those vehicles might have had a longer door to work with.

WRT to load capacity, when Dodge first introduced the Dakota, they stamped a couple sets steps/pockets in the inner bedsides and another on the inside and just below the topof the wheel tubs to accept 2x6s(laid flat) to overcome the lack of width between the tubs. Thus, with tailgate down and 2x6s installed, that truck could haul several full sheets of plywood, drywall, etc. - nice and flat. Other manufacturers followed suit in their subsequent redesigns.

Just food for thought.
