Some directly into the intake manifold, others had an aux plate that fit under the carb with drilled passages feeding the oil. Some were a fixed "buy a unit for the engine size range" but on more expensive units there is an adjustable needle valve or interchangeable orifices located in the jar lid or the plate. The valve or orifice could be used to fine tune the specific amount of oil that could be drawn into the engine depending on size and typical operation or location.
